MISINTERPRETED
Wk 21 Day 3

2 Samuel 20:20
20 "Far be it from me!" Joab replied, "Far be it from me to swallow up or destroy!

(In context > 2 Samuel 20:16-21)

When Sheba son of Bicri rebelled against David, Joab and David's men tried to hunt him down. As Joab was in search of Sheba, the peaceful and faithful people in Israel (v. 19) thought that Joab and his men came to ruin Israel. However, we know that is not the case.

What can we learn?

From the wise woman's vantage point:
  • With the good that we do, some people will sometimes misinterpret our real motives (and vice verse, we could assume the same for us.)
  • It's always good to take initiative to talk and clarify things before making an assumption.
  • When things are set and clear, we can move forward and possibly help out in pursuing what is right (v. 21c).

From Joab's vantage point:
  • People will sometimes misinterpret our actions.
  • If they don't call to clarify things, be the one to clarify things for them.
  • Don't barge; learn to listen to what people say (v.17).
  • When asked to explain, clearly explain things to be understood.
  • Express real motives in all honesty!

:: There may be times when I am in either situation (Joab or the wise woman). Right now, I need to learn to listen more (Joab).. to make sure I make things clear so I don't assume the wrong things from a person (wise woman). I believe that there are times I've misinterpreted people; I need to be proactive in making it clear so I can help them pursue in the good things they plan to do in their lives. With that, they will also see what good life I also want them to have. No misinterpretations when we clear things out. Be a catalyst to clarity to pursue great things together for the glory of God!

// Lord, thank you for this profound truth. Sometimes I do forget about making sure I clear things out before I make an assumption. I could misinterpret people's actions right away and I must make sure I am proactive in talking to them about it. Help me to put this into action. Your Word is truly great that it teaches me great principles even from taking the stories the beginning of time! Lord, please help me to be understanding and to not quickly judge (and not judge at all!). I want to give glory to Your name and to be united with other people's vision to pursue a greater work for Your kingdom. I lift this up to you in Jesus' name, amen.
